Throughout the course of the show there were many attempts to prove Lincoln Burrows was innocent of killing Terrence Steadman, the Vice-President-s brother. Michael obviously undertook the most dramatic attempt when he broke into Fox River State Penitentiary. That set into motion a series of events leading to the brothers- discovery of the audio file featuring Steadman-s reference to framing Lincoln. The audio file was proof of Lincoln-s innocence, and in “Sweet Caroline’ a deal was struck with President Reynolds to give him a full pardon. But after the Company intimidates Reynolds into resigning, the brothers were on the run to Panama.Didn-t catch that? This explains it.
Michael often manipulated and misdirected the other characters (including his allies) in his quest to prove his brother-s innocence. A breakthrough (finding the audio file) would be followed by another setback (the President resigning). Lincoln-s eventual exoneration comes courtesy of Kellerman. In “Sona’, the agent provides proof through testimony and documentation that Lincoln is innocent of the assassination; all charges against Lincoln (and Sarah) are dropped. In proving Lincoln-s innocence, it-s Kellerman himself who ends up being arrested after his evidence proves self-incriminating. Meanwhile, after the triumph of Lincoln-s exoneration and meeting up with Sarah, another setback occurs: Michael is incarcerated in Sona Prison.
